Visiting Fréjus and Saint-Raphaël: the must-see attractions

Fancy experiencing the French Riviera in a different way? A visit to Fréjus and Saint-Raphaël offers the chance to enjoy a region that combines heritage, nature and the seaside.

The two towns are neighbours and complement each other. Fréjus offers a stronger focus on heritage, whilst Saint-Raphaël is more oriented towards the coast and outdoor activities.

In just a few days, you can alternate between walks, sightseeing and time by the sea, without spending hours in the car.

Fréjus: must-see attractions

Fréjus is notable for the presence of several historic sites scattered throughout the town.

The amphitheatre remains one of the most striking sites. Easily accessible, it gives an idea of the city’s importance in Roman times and now hosts events.

Remains of the aqueduct can also be seen in various places. Even though they are only partially preserved, they provide an insight into how the town was organised at the time.

In the city centre, Saint-Léonce Cathedral and its cloister offer a more peaceful experience right in the heart of the city. Right next door, the baptistery – one of the oldest in France – rounds off the tour.

Explore the coast in a different way

A visit to Fréjus and Saint-Raphaël is also a chance to make the most of the Mediterranean. From Port-Fréjus, there are plenty of water sports on offer, including scuba diving.

The region is home to several renowned dive sites, suitable for both beginners and more experienced divers. Among the best known, Île d’Or and Le Lion de Mer offer a rich and varied seabed.

These areas are home to a rich variety of marine life: fish, groupers, octopuses and other Mediterranean species thrive in a pristine environment. For those who prefer to stay on the surface, snorkelling also offers the chance to explore these underwater landscapes.

Day trips to the villages of the Var

The area around Fréjus and Saint-Raphaël also offers the chance to venture away from the coast and explore some of the Var’s traditional villages.

Roquebrune-sur-Argens, just a few kilometres away, is often the first stop. The village is dominated by its famous rock and also provides access to the Argens Gorges.

A little further on, Tourtour – nicknamed “the village in the sky” – offers unobstructed views across the entire region. Its narrow streets and shaded squares make it a pleasant place to stop for a break.

On the Gulf of Saint-Tropez side, Gassin offers sweeping views of the Mediterranean. Finally, the more low-key Seillans charms visitors with its Provençal atmosphere and its small, flower-filled squares.

Hikes and panoramic views in the Estérel

The Estérel massif is the perfect destination for nature lovers. With its many trails, it’s ideal for hiking, mountain biking and trail running.

What makes this mountain range so distinctive is its red rock, which contrasts beautifully with the blue of the Mediterranean. There are several viewpoints well worth a visit, including Cap Dramont, Pic de l’Ours and Mont Vinaigre.

These walks allow you to get away from the coast whilst enjoying varied and easily accessible scenery.

The historic centre of Saint-Raphaël

The old town centre of Saint-Raphaël, formerly known as the Quartier du Village, retains a more traditional atmosphere. It features narrow streets, small squares and a daily market where flowers and local produce are sold side by side.

The 12th-century Church of San Raféu is one of the oldest buildings in the town. Its presbytery now houses the archaeological museum.

You can also climb to the top of the tower to enjoy a 360° panoramic view. The view stretches from the Estérel mountains to the sea, taking in the lakes and the Roquebrune rock.

Nearby, the Basilica of Notre-Dame de la Victoire, with its distinctive Roman-Byzantine style, rounds off a tour of the town centre.

Staying in Saint-Raphaël, in the heart of the harbour

To make the most of your stay and explore Fréjus and Saint-Raphaël, choosing the right accommodation is key. Situated opposite the Old Port, Le Touring Boutique Hotel offers a central base from which to discover the area.

With its ten rooms and suites, the hotel offers an intimate atmosphere, overlooking the sea and the bustling harbour. From the hotel, it is easy to walk to the beaches, the historic centre or the starting points for trips to the Estérel.

The Touring also offers a range of venues to enhance your stay: the Café Touring for a moment’s respite overlooking the harbour, the Nami restaurant for a unique dining experience, and the Ring Bar where you can enjoy the rooftop at the end of the day.
